The Letter of John 1

1:1This is about the Word of Life— that which was from the beginning, which we have heard and seen and touched.1:2This Life appeared; we have seen it, and we are witnessing and reporting to you the eternal life which was from the Father and appeared to us.1:3And we are reporting these things to you so you too can be close friends with us; and not only with us, but also with the Father and his Son Jesus the Anointed.1:4We write these things so we can be filled with joy.

1:5Now this is the message we heard from him and are passing along to you: that God is light; there is no darkness in him at all.1:6Anyone who says they are close friends with him yet is in step with darkness is lying.1:7But if we stay in step with the light, as he is in the light, we are close friends with each other and the blood of Jesus his Son cleans us from every failure.1:8If we say we never fail, we deceive ourselves and have no truth in us.1:9But if we admit we fail, he is faithful and just and will pardon us and clean us from all injustice.1:10If we say we have not failed, we have made him a liar and his Word is not in us.

2:1My little ones [in the faith], I write these things to you so you might not fail, but if anyone does, we have an advocate on our behalf to the Father: Jesus the Anointed, the Just.2:2And he is the full payment for our failures, and not only for ours, but also for the whole world.2:3And this is how we can be sure we have known him: if we always keep his commands.2:4Anyone who says “I have known him” but doesn’t keep his commands is a liar.2:5But if anyone always keeps his Word, the love of God has truly been perfected in them. This is how we know we belong to him:2:6whoever says they remain in him must keep pace with him.

2:7Loved ones, I am not giving you a new command but an old one you’ve had from the beginning: the Word you heard.2:8Yet in a way I really am giving you a new command, verified by both him and you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already appearing.2:9Anyone who says they are in the light, but hates others, is still in darkness.2:10But anyone who loves others remains in the light and there is no trap waiting for them.2:11Yet anyone who hates others is in darkness and keeping in step with it; they don’t realize where they are going because the darkness has blinded them.

2:12I write to you, little ones, because you have been forgiven of your failures by means of his Name.

2:13I write to you, parents, because you have known the One from the beginning.

2:14I write to you, young ones, because you have conquered the evil one.

I write to you, students, because you have known the Father.

I write to you, parents, because you have known the One from the beginning.

I write to you, young ones, because you are strong, and the Word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the evil one.

2:15Do not love the world and all that goes with it. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in them.2:16For everything in the world— its appeal to the flesh and the eyes, all its pretense— is not from the Father but from the world.2:17And the world and its desire is passing away, but the one doing God’s will lasts till the end.

2:18Little ones, it is the last hour. And just as you heard that an impostor Anointed is coming, now also many such fakes have come, which is how we know it’s the last hour.2:19And these fakes came from among us! But if they had really been one of us, they would have stayed, so their leaving proves they were never one of us at all.2:20You all have an anointing from the Holy One and are aware of all this.

2:21I write to you, not to acquaint you with the truth but because you already know it, for no lie comes from it.2:22Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Anointed? Such a person is the Impostor Anointed who denies both the Father and the Son.2:23Everyone who denies the Son also denies the Father, but everyone who declares allegiance to the Son has the Father as well.2:24Let that which you have heard from the beginning remain in you; if it does, you will also remain in the Son and the Father.2:25This is what he promised us: eternal life.

2:26I write these things to you about the ones who are deceiving you.2:27The anointing you received from him remains in you and you really don’t need a teacher, but just as his anointing teaches you everything true, remain in him.2:28So remain in him, little ones, so that whenever he appears we will be bold and unashamed in his presence.2:29If you know that he is just, then you also know that whoever does justice is his child.3:1Try and grasp the degree of love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God— that’s what we are! And because of this, the world does not know us and did not know him.

3:2Loved ones, we are children of God now, but what we will be has not yet appeared. Yet whenever he appears, we will be like him, because we will see him as he is.3:3And all who have set their hope on him purify themselves, just as he is pure.3:4Everyone who fails is also a lawbreaker; failing is lawlessness.3:5As you know, that One made his appearance for the purpose of taking away our failures, and there is no failing in him.3:6So everyone who remains in him does not fail, but whoever does fail has not seen him or known him.

3:7Little ones, let no one deceive you: the one who does justice is righteous, in the same way that the One is righteous.3:8Conversely, the one who fails comes from the Slanderer, for the Slanderer has been failing from the beginning. This is why the God-Man appeared: to nullify the Slanderer’s works.3:9A child of God does not keep failing, because his very substance remains in them; they who are God’s children cannot keep failing.

3:10So this is how you can tell the children of God from the children of the Slanderer: everyone who does injustice and who does not love others is not of God.3:11This is the message you heard from the beginning: we must love each other.3:12We must not be like Cain, who followed the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he do it? Because his works were evil but his brother’s were righteous.

3:13So don’t be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.3:14We know that we have moved out of death and into life because we love others. But the one without love remains in death.3:15Whoever hates others is a murderer, and you know that eternal life cannot remain in a murderer.3:16This is how we have known love: the One laid down his life for our sakes. So also we ought to lay down our lives for others.3:17Now if anyone has an income in this world yet sees someone in need and is cold-hearted, how can the love of God remain in them?3:18Little ones, we must not only say we love, but put it into genuine action. That is how we will know we are of the truth.

3:19And we will be confident in his presence,3:20because even if we feel guilty, God knows us better than we know ourselves.3:21Even if we don’t feel guilty we can still come before God3:22and boldly ask for whatever we want— provided we keep his commands and do what pleases him.3:23And this is his command: to trust in the Name of his Son Jesus the Anointed, and to love each other.3:24That is his command, so whoever keeps it remains in him, and he in them.

We know he remains in us by the Spirit he gives us.4:1So, loved ones, do not believe every spirit, but test it to make sure it is from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.4:2Here is the test: if the spirit affirms that Jesus the Anointed came in the flesh, it is from God;4:3if it denies this, it is not of God but of the Impostor Anointed that you have heard is coming, and in fact is already in the world.4:4Little ones, you are of God and you have conquered them, because the One in you is greater than the one in the world.4:5They speak like the world because they are part of it, so it listens to them.4:6But we are of God, so those who know God listen to us, but those who are not of God don’t. This is how you can tell the spirit of truth from the spirit of deception.

4:7Loved ones, love each other, for love comes from God. Those who love are the ones who know God and are his children.4:8But those who do not love never knew God, because God is love.4:9The love of God appeared among us when he sent his only-born Son into the world, so that we could live by means of him.4:10This is love: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as the full payment for our failures.4:11Dear ones, if God loves us in this way, we should also love each other.

4:12No one has ever put God under investigation, but if we keep loving each other, God remains in us and his love is perfected in us.4:13And we can know we are remaining in him and he in us, because he has given to us from his Spirit.4:14We have examined and are testifying that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world.4:15Whoever publicly testifies that Jesus is the God-Man is one in whom God remains, and them in God.4:16We have known and believed the love God has in us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God in them.4:17This is how love is perfected in us, so that we can be bold in the day of judgment, if we are like him in this world.4:18There is no fear in love; mature love throws it out, because fear has to do with punishment. So the one who has no fear has matured in love.

4:19We love because he loved us first.4:20If anyone says “I love God” but hates others, they are lying, because whoever does not love those they can see, cannot love God whom they have not seen.4:21And we have this command from God, that whoever loves him must also love other people.5:1Whoever believes that Jesus is the Anointed is a child of God, and such a child must also love his other children as well.5:2And this is how we know we love his other children: by loving God and carrying out his commands;5:3that is the love of God. And his commands are not heavy weights to carry,5:4because all who are God’s children are conquering the world— it is our faith that conquers it.5:5Who conquers the world, if not those who believe that Jesus is the God-Man?

5:6Jesus the Anointed is the one who came by means of water and blood— not only water but also blood— and the Spirit is the truthful witness.5:7So there are three witnesses:5:8the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and they all agree.5:9If we accept the witness of mere humans, then the witness of God concerning his Son is greater.5:10Whoever puts their trust in the God-Man has this witness in them, but whoever does not believe God has called him a liar, because they have not believed God’s testimony about his Son.5:11And this is the testimony: that God gave us eternal life, the life that is in his Son.5:12So whoever has the Son has life, but whoever does not have the God-Man does not have life.

5:13I write these things to you so you can understand that you have eternal life, you who put your trust in the Name of the God-Man.5:14We can boldly approach God with any request that is according to his will; he will hear us.5:15And if we know he hears us, whatever we request is ours.

5:16If anyone sees another failing, but in a way that does not lead to death, they should pray and thus save the failing one’s life. (This doesn’t apply to a failure that leads to death; they shouldn’t pray about that.)5:17All injustice is failing and does not lead to death.5:18We know that no child of God keeps failing, but the One born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot touch them.

5:19We know that we are from God but the whole world is assigned to the evil one.5:20Yet we also know that the God-Man is coming and has given us understanding, so we may know the True One. And we belong to the True One, his Son Jesus the Anointed. He is the True One of God and eternal life.5:21Little ones, guard yourselves from idols!
