The Letter of Peter 2

1:1Simon Peter, a slave and Ambassador of Jesus the Anointed,

To the ones who happened upon a faith as precious as ours, in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus the Anointed:

1:2Abundant favor and peace to you all, in recognition of our God and Master Jesus!1:3It is through that recognition of the One who calls us that he freely grants from his divine power for us to live devoutly.1:4Through his own honor and valor he has freely given us great and priceless promises, to make it possible for you to be in a close bond with the divine nature. You ran away from the lust-driven corruption in the world,1:5but don’t stop there. Put every bit of effort into this:

  • to faith, add valor;
  • to valor, add knowledge;
  • 1:6to knowledge, add self-control;
  • to self-control, add endurance;
  • to endurance, add dedication;
  • 1:7to dedication, add fondness for others;
  • to fondness for others, add love.

1:8Continuing to pursue these things in recognition of our Master Jesus the Anointed makes you neither lazy nor unfruitful.1:9For those who do not possess these qualities are closing their eyes, being oblivious to their having been cleansed from their old failures.1:10So then, brothers and sisters, get busy! Confirm your choice and calling, for by doing so you will never be tripped up.1:11This is how entrance into the ageless kingdom of our Master and Savior Jesus the Anointed will be richly supplied to you.

1:12So I will always keep reminding you of these things, even though you are already aware of them since you have stood firm in the present truth.1:13Yet at the same time, I consider it worthwhile that as long as I am in this “tent” I’ll be waking you up as a reminder.1:14I am aware that my time to discard this “tent” approaches quickly, as our Master Jesus the Anointed made clear to me.1:15Yet I will make every effort to see to it that you remember these things after I leave.

1:16When we told you about our Master Jesus the Anointed, we did not follow clever myths but saw his power and presence with our own eyes.1:17God the Father gave him value and honor when he said in his majestic, magnificent voice, “This is my Son, whom I love, and in whom I delight.”1:18We heard this sound from heaven when we were with him on the mountain.1:19And you do well to pay attention to the confirmed prophetic word, which is like a lamp shining in a dingy place until the day breaks and the light-bringer rises in your hearts.

1:20Know this first of all: not a single Writing gets its interpretation from the prophet,1:21for no prophecy was ever carried on due to human will; instead, speaking to people from God was carried on by the Holy Spirit.2:1Yet false prophets came among the people, and there will also be false teachers among you. They will smuggle in ruin and even disown the One who bought them and owns them! So they will bring sudden destruction upon themselves2:2and many will follow along with reckless abandon. Because of them, the way of the truth will be slandered;2:3they will greedily exploit you by means of smooth talk. But their judgment is not waiting forever, and their destruction hasn’t dozed off.

2:4For if God did not spare the Messengers who failed, but bound and imprisoned them in the gloom of Tartarus, and handed them over to be retained for judgment,

2:5and if he did not spare the ancient world (except for protecting eight, one of which was Noah, an announcer of justice) but inflicted the irreverent world with the Flood,

2:6and if he reduced the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes in a catastrophe and condemned them as an example for the irreverent2:7(having rescued righteous Lot who lived among them2:8and whose soul was tormented day and night by their lawless acts),

2:9then the Master knew full well how to rescue the devout out of trials, yet hold the unrighteous in reserve for Judgment Day.

2:10Yet there are those who bow to the flesh and defile it in lust, daring to despise mastery. They are given to self-gratification and do not hesitate to slander,2:11whereas Messengers, who are greater in strength and power, do not bring slanderous judgment against them before the Master.2:12Yet in their slandering they doom themselves, like unthinking animals ignorant of the fact that they are born into captivity and destined to die;2:13their fate is the wage they earned from injustice. They are the ones who indulge in the luxury of daily self-gratification. They are blemishes and flaws who indulge in their seductions while they party with you.2:14Their eyes are saturated with adultery and they never stop luring unstable souls into failing.

They are accursed; their hearts have been conditioned by greed.2:15Once they left the straight path they were led astray themselves (like Balaam of Beor, who loved the wages of injustice.2:16Yet his own lawlessness was exposed by a mute beast of burden who was caused by God to speak with a human voice to prevent the prophet’s insanity).2:17They are waterless springs and storm-driven mists for whom the gloomy darkness has been reserved.2:18Made to utter inflated and conceited things, they use the lusts of the flesh to lure back into recklessness the few who are barely escaping from those practicing deception.2:19They like to be professors of freedom, but they are inherently enslaved themselves to corruption, for it degrades those it has enslaved.

2:20Because if they fled from the foul pollution of the world and recognized our Master and Savior Jesus the Anointed, then got involved in it again, they have become worse off than before.2:21It would have been better for them to never have recognized the right way than to recognize the holy precept they had been given and then turn back.2:22The proverbs about them are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A washed pig returns to its wallowing in the mud.”

3:1Loved ones, this is already the second letter I’m writing to you, waking you up and reminding you of the sincere understanding of what has been declared before.3:2I am reminding you of what was declared before by the holy prophets, and the teachings of your Ambassadors of the Master and Savior.3:3Understand above all that in the last days mockers will come (because mockery is what they crave),3:4saying, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? From the time our ancestors died until now, everything goes on as it has from the beginning of creation.”3:5For they are deliberately ignorant of this: that the ancient heavens and earth were made out of water and held together in water by the word of God.3:6The world at that time was destroyed by the Flood,3:7but the current heavens and earth have been reserved by that same word to be burned, being kept for the day of judgment and the destruction of irreverent people.

3:8Now do not let this one thing escape you, loved ones: To the Master, one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.3:9The Master is not late with his promise, as some consider lateness, but is being patient with you. He does not intend for any to die, but to make room for all to come to a change of mind.3:10Yet the Day of the Master will come as a thief; the heavens will disappear with a roar and the elements will be dissolved by burning, so that everything done in the earth will be discovered.

3:11Seeing that everything will disintegrate in this way, what kind of people should you be? You behavior should be devout,3:12anticipating and hurrying along the arrival of the Day of God when the heavens will be burned up and the elements consumed by fire.3:13But according to his promise, we hope for a new heavens and earth where justice lives.3:14So, loved ones, hope for these things. Make every effort to be found in peace, spotless and flawless in him.3:15And consider the patient salvation of our Master, as our dear brother Paul writes to you in the wisdom he was given.3:16He writes about all these things, talking about them in his letters. Some of it is hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist as they do with the other Writings, to their own destruction.

3:17You then, loved ones, know this ahead of time: Be on guard so that you are not led away into deception by those with loose morals, making you lose your resolve.3:18Yet grow in the favor and knowledge of our Master and Savior Jesus the Anointed. All honor to him, now and up to the first day of eternity, absolutely!
