To The Thessalonians 2

1:1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the Congregation in Thessalonica, united with God the Father and Master Jesus the Anointed:

1:2Favor and peace to you from God our Father and Master Jesus the Anointed!

1:3It is fitting that we should always be thanking God for you, sisters and brothers, seeing that your faith is flourishing and your love for each other is increasing.1:4We are so proud of you among the Congregations of God, because of your endurance and faith through your persecutions and the suffering you bear.1:5This displays the perfect justice of God, that you were considered worthy of the kingdom of God for which you suffer,1:6because he will repay those who are oppressing you.1:7You who are being oppressed, along with us, will be relieved when Master Jesus is revealed from heaven with his powerful Messengers.

1:8He will deal out a blazing fire of vengeance to those who don’t know God and who do not heed the Gospel of our Master Jesus.1:9They will have earned endless ruin from the presence of the Master and from his majestic strength,1:10when he comes on that Day to be honored by his holy ones and held in awe by all the believers who accepted our testimony.1:11We always pray for you about this, so that you are counted worthy of our God’s calling and fulfill every benefit of goodness and powerful work of faith.1:12Then the Name of our Master Jesus will be honored in you, and you in him, according to the favor of our God and Master Jesus the Anointed.

2:1Now, brothers and sisters, concerning the coming of our Master Jesus the Anointed and our gathering together with him:2:2Please do not be easily disturbed or alarmed in your minds or spirits, because no word or letter has come from us saying that the Day of the Master is already here.2:3Don’t let anyone fool you by any means, because that won’t happen until after the Departure, and then the Lawless One, the Destroyer, will be revealed.2:4He opposes everything and elevates himself over every god or object of worship, even to the point of seating himself in the Temple of God and proclaiming himself God.2:5You have forgotten that I told you these things when I was with you.

2:6And you know what is holding him back for now, so that he is only revealed in his time.2:7For although the secret of lawlessness is already in operation, it is only after the Restrainer is taken out of the way12:8that the Lawless One will be revealed. This is the one the Master Jesus will do away with by the breath of his mouth, and will neutralize when he appears at his arrival.2:9He will come when the Adversary is at the height of his power, which he held by means of signs and fake miracles and seduction.2:10This injustice will all have been done to those who are dying, because they would not love the truth that would save them.2:11As a result, God will send them in the wrong direction2 so they will believe the lie,2:12and in this way all who rejected the truth and celebrated injustice will be condemned.

2:13Now we should always thank God for you, sisters and brothers loved by the Master, because God favored you as the first harvest to come into salvation via the Holy Spirit, in true faith.2:14And he called you through our Gospel so you would obtain the favor of our Master Jesus the Anointed.2:15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by word or letter from us.

2:16Now may our Master Jesus the Anointed himself, and our God and Father who loves us and graciously gives us eternal comfort and a good hope,2:17soothe your hearts and set you firmly in every good action and word.

3:1Oh, and pray for us, sisters and brothers, so that the Word of the Master may pick up speed and be exalted, just as it has with you,3:2and that we are rescued from disgusting and evil people since not everyone is of the faith.3:3Yet the Master is faithful to establish you and guard you from the evil one.3:4We have confidence in the Master concerning you, that you will continue doing what we solemnly commission you to do.3:5May the Master guide your hearts toward the love of God and the endurance of the Anointed.

3:6Now we are solemnly commissioning you, sisters and brothers, in the Name of our Master Jesus the Anointed, to separate yourselves from every believer who has a habit of slacking and not staying with the tradition they accepted from us.3:7For you know you are to imitate us, and we were not lazy among you.3:8Neither did we accept handouts from anyone, but worked very hard night and day so we would not be a burden to any of you.3:9And it isn’t as though we don’t have the right, but that we wanted to be a model for you to follow.3:10Even while we were still with you, we made the rule that if anyone refuses to work then they should go hungry.3:11For we are hearing that some among you are not being busy, but busybodies.3:12So we insist, and appeal by the Master Jesus the Anointed, that they mind their own business and earn their own keep.

3:13Don’t give up doing the right things, brothers and sisters.3:14If anyone does not heed this word we’ve written to you, take note of them and do not associate with them so they’ll be ashamed.3:15Yet don’t treat them as an enemy but warn them as a believer.

3:16Now may the Master of Peace give you peace in everything and in every way; may the Master be with you all.3:17This greeting is in my (Paul’s) own hand, which is how I sign all my letters.3:18May the favor of our Master Jesus the Anointed be with all of you.

  1. 1Lit. Greek, “Restrainer until out of the middle may appear”, a phrase meaning to stand out from among others. There is a technical discussion at Better Bibles Blog, and one scholar there holds that this matter of being out of the way must be understood as passive; that is, the Restrainer is taken out of the way, rather than stepping out of the way of its own volition.
  2. 2Trad. “a strong delusion,” but the Greek words are literally “action of diversion” (energeian planEs).
