To The Ephesians

1:1Paul, an Ambassador of Anointed Jesus through the will of God,

To the holy ones living in Ephesus and trusting in Anointed Jesus:

1:2Favor and peace to you all from God our Father and Master Jesus the Anointed.

1:3May the God and Father of our Master Jesus the Anointed be blessed, for through the Anointed he gave us every spiritual blessing in the heavens.1:4Because of his love, he chose us for himself before the foundation of the world to be holy and flawless in his view.1:5It delighted him to lock us into the place of his own sons and daughters through Jesus the Anointed.

1:6Praise his honor and favor! He showed his favor to us in the Loved One,1:7who dismissed all the charges against us by means of his blood. He paid for us to be acquitted of all charges with the overwhelming favor1:8he lavished on us in his wise plan.1:9It delighted him to make his secret will known to us,1:10his plan to dispense the progression of the ages to the goal of bringing everything in heaven and earth to the Anointed.1:11Not only that, but God in his wisdom also destined us,1:12who were expected first with the Anointed, to honor him.1:13Likewise for you who heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation. You believed and were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,1:14who is the down payment that guarantees our inheritance. Praise and honor to him!

1:15So ever since I heard of your faith in the Master Jesus and your love for all the holy ones,1:16I haven’t stopped thanking God because of you! You are in my prayers,1:17especially that the God of our Master Jesus the Anointed, the glorious Father, may give you all the spirit of wisdom and reveal knowledge of him.1:18He has illuminated your minds so you can grasp the hope of your calling, the riches of his honor, your inheritance among the holy ones,1:19and the overflowing great power he pours into us who believe. This is the same power1:20he used to raise the Anointed from the dead and seat him at his right hand in heaven,1:21over every rule and authority and power and mastery, and every name there is, not only in this age but also in the next.1:22God put all of them beneath his feet, and he alone is the one given by God as the head of the Congregation,1:23which is his body, bringing everything to completion.1

2:1You are all dead to the blunders and failures2:2in which you once lived as part of this age. You were followers of the world and the ruling authority of the air, the spirit behind those who are stubbornly hostile.2:3We all used to act on the urges of our flesh, doing its bidding and thinking its way, and of course we deserved fury just like the rest.2:4But God, forever rich in compassion because of the love he had for us,2:5made us forever dead to blunders and alive to the Anointed— you have been saved because of his favor!

2:6Through Anointed Jesus, he raised us and seated us among the celestial ones,2:7so that he could show in the coming ages the overwhelming riches of his favor— his kindness to us who are united with him.2:8And it is because of this favor that you have been saved through faith. This is all a gift of God,2:9not something you did, so nobody can brag.2:10For we are his accomplishment, created in unity with Anointed Jesus to do the good deeds God prepared for us to continue doing.

2:11Don’t forget that once all you non-Judeans were called ‘uncircumcised’ by those who were circumcised by human hands.2:12In that age you all were apart from the Anointed, alienated from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenant of promise. You were without hope and without God in the world.2:13But now, united by the blood of Anointed Jesus, all of you who were once far away became near.2:14For he is our peace; in his flesh he joined the two groups into one, demolishing the barrier between them.2:15He made peace by voiding the law of decreed commands, so that the two would be created as one new person united with him.2:16He reconciled them both to God in one body by means of the cross, putting the hostility to death.2:17He came to bring the Gospel of peace to all of you, the far and the near.2:18So through him, both have access to the Father in one Spirit.

2:19As a result, then, you are no longer strangers and aliens but fellow citizens with the holy ones, living in the very house of God.2:20You are a house built on the foundation of the Ambassadors and prophets, whose cornerstone2 is Jesus the Anointed himself.2:21This house is constructed by the Master and is growing into a holy temple.2:22And you are also being constructed into this spiritual home of God.

3:1This is why I, Paul, am a prisoner of Anointed Jesus, for the sake of the non-Judeans.3:2Surely you have heard of the detailed plan of God’s favor to me for your sakes.3:3He revealed the secret to me, as I wrote to you briefly before.3:4By reading what I wrote about that, you are able to grasp my full understanding of the secret of the Anointed.3:5It was not revealed to people in other generations but now is revealed in spirit to his holy Ambassadors and prophets.3:6This secret is that the non-Judeans would be joint-heirs, of the same body, sharing in the promise of Anointed Jesus through the Gospel.3:7I was designated an attendant of this secret according to the gift of God’s favor, a gift granted to me by his power.

3:8This favor was given to me, though I am lower than the lowest of the holy ones, to bring the non-Judeans the Gospel of the Anointed’s unfathomable riches,3:9and to make one and all see the detailed secret plan that God, who created everything, kept hidden for ages.3:10Now, by means of the Congregation, the celestial rulers and authorities can know the multi-faceted wisdom of God,3:11whose purpose from the ages was to make Anointed Jesus our Master.3:12Because of our faith in him, we can approach God boldly and confidently.

3:13I say all of that so you will not be discouraged over my suffering for you; it is in your honor.3:14For this reason I humble myself before the Father,3:15for whom all people groups in heaven and earth are named.3:16I ask that from his rich supply of honor he may empower you through his Spirit,3:17so that the Anointed may live within you by the faith in your hearts. Being rooted and founded in love, I pray3:18that you will be strong and that you will grasp, along with all the other holy ones, the width and length and height and depth of the Anointed’s love,3:19a love that is really beyond us. Then you will be entirely filled with God.

3:20Now all honor belongs to the One who is able to do extravagantly more than we ask or imagine by his power operating in us,3:21the Congregation of Anointed Jesus, for all generations and endless ages, absolutely!

4:1So I, the Master’s captive, urge you to keep pace with the appointment to which you were called.4:2Be humble, gentle, and patient, tolerating each other in love.4:3Make an effort to keep the unity of the Spirit, tied together with peace.4:4Be one body and one spirit, just as you were also called into one hope,4:5one Master, one faith, one immersion,4:6and one God and Father who is over, through, and in all.4:7Yet each of us was given favor in accordance with how the Anointed has apportioned each gift.

4:8What does it mean, “Ascending to the heights, he captured captivity and gave gifts to people”?4:9Well, in order to ascend it means he first descended into the lower parts of the earth.4:10The same one who descended also ascended above the heavens, to complete everything.4:11In fact, he gave the Ambassadors, the prophets, those who bring the Gospel, the shepherds and teachers,4:12to equip the holy ones for doing the work of attendants, to build up the body of the Anointed.4:13The goal is that we should all reach unity of faith and full understanding of the God-Man, to a mature man of the full stature of the Anointed.4:14Then we will no longer be minors, running here and there and being carried away by whatever teaching is blowing in the wind. Such things come from con artists and crafty people who scheme to lead others astray.

4:15Speaking the truth in love is how we can make everything grow into the Anointed, the Head.4:16The entire body grows out of him, connected together and united to the supply at every point of contact. Each part does its work to make the body grow and build itself up in love.4:17So this is what I’m getting at, as a witness for the Master: In no way should you still be following in the footsteps of the non-Judeans. Their thinking is muddled4:18and dark; they are alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance, caused by their hard hearts.4:19They are beyond feeling, given over to vice and greed and all sorts of unsavory things.

4:20Yet this is not what you learned4:21about the Anointed, since surely you heard him and were taught by him according to the truth about Jesus.4:22You must put off the old ways, the old self that is corrupted by seductive desires.4:23Be rejuvenated instead in mind and spirit,4:24and put on the new you that is being created by God in justice and devotion to the truth.4:25So get rid of falsehood and speak the truth with those around you, since we are members of each other.4:26It’s not a fault to be angry, but don’t let the sun set before you resolve it;4:27don’t give the Slanderer an advantage!

4:28The thief must stop stealing and get to work; they must work with their own hands so they can share with the needy.4:29Do not let any foul talk come out of your mouths; only say what is good and needed to build up others and favor those who hear.4:30And do not distress the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.4:31Let all bitterness, fury, rage, shouting, and slander be far removed from you, along with all malice.4:32Instead, do good to each other and be compassionate, behaving graciously among yourselves just as God through the Anointed also dealt graciously with all of us.5:1So imitate God as dearly loved children,5:2and walk in love just as the Anointed loved us and gave himself up for our sake as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

5:3As is fitting for holy people, let there be no grounds for charges of promiscuity, dirtiness, or even greed to be brought against you—5:4and no filth or stupid talk or innuendo. Instead of being those things, be thankful.5:5For you know and understand that no promiscuous or dirty or greedy people (who are idolaters) will have a share in the inheritance of the kingdom of the Anointed and of God.

5:6Let no one fool you with hollow words about all this, because the rage of God is coming upon those who stubbornly resist him.5:7No, do not join in with them!5:8For you were once darkness but now, unified with the Master, you are light.5:9So act like people of the light, since light produces all goodness and justice and truth,5:10testing to see what is most pleasing to the Master.5:11And do not join in with the unproductive acts of darkness, but instead expose them.5:12It’s shameful to even talk about what they do.5:13But everything is being exposed under the light appearing everywhere, for light is indeed appearing.

5:14This is why it says, “Wake up, sleeper! Get up, and the Anointed will illuminate you.”5:15So make sure that you are keeping pace— not with the unwise but with the wise,5:16making good use of the time in these evil days.5:17For that reason, do not become dimwitted but intelligent regarding the will of the Master.5:18And don’t get drunk with wine, which shows a lack of discipline, but be filled in spirit:3

5:19
  • talking among yourselves with praise songs, festive songs, and spiritual songs,
  • singing and playing music in your hearts to the Master,
  • 5:20always giving thanks to God for everything in the name of our Master Jesus the Anointed,
  • 5:21being supportive of each other because you fear the Anointed5:22(wives, to your own husbands, as to the Master).

5:23Since the man is the source of the woman just as the Anointed is the source of the Congregation (which is the Body he saved),5:24the wives are to support their husbands in every way, just as the congregation supports the Anointed.

5:25Husbands, love your wives in the same way that the Anointed did when he gave himself up for the Congregation,5:26to make her special and bathed clean by his pronouncement.5:27This way he could present the Congregation with himself as esteemed— not blemished, wrinkled, or any other such thing, but special and flawless.5:28Likewise, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies. After all, a husband is really loving himself when he loves his wife,5:29since nobody ever hates their own body; they feed it and take care of it. That’s what the Anointed does for the Congregation,5:30a Body of which we are all parts.5:31In this same way, a man leaves his parents to join completely with his wife, and they become one flesh.5:32This is a big secret, but I’m talking about the Anointed and the Congregation.5:33To emphasize: every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, or a wife may live in fear of her husband.

6:1Children, listen to your parents because of the Master; it’s the right thing to do.6:2“Honor your father and mother” is the first precept with a promise:6:3that it may go well with you and you live long on the earth.6:4And fathers, do not exasperate your children! Instead, nurture them in the training and counsel of the Master.

6:5Slaves, listen to your earthly masters with sincere concern and an open heart, as you would to the Anointed.6:6Don’t merely put on a show like sycophants, but as slaves of the Anointed, do God’s will from your soul.6:7Slave out of goodwill, as you would to the Master and not just to people.6:8Understand that if anyone does good they will be repaid for it from the Master, whether slave or free.6:9And masters, the same goes for you! Tone down the threats; keep in mind that the Master of both of you is in heaven, and he shows no partiality.

6:10As for the rest of you, be empowered by the Master and his strong rule.6:11Put on the complete armor of God to enable you to stand against the strategies of the Slanderer.6:12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, the authorities, the demonic powers of darkness, the evil celestial spiritual forces.6:13Because of that, take up the complete armor of God so you are able to stand firm in the day of evil, to stand after having overpowered them. So stand firm:

  • 6:14wearing a belt around your waist by means of truth,
  • putting on the torso armor of justice,
  • 6:15wearing the shoes of readiness to spread the Gospel of peace,
  • 6:16and taking up in front of them all the full-sized shield of the faith, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming projectiles of the evil one.

6:17Having done all of that, accept the helmet of salvation and the sword of that spirit which is the declaration of God.

6:18In your prayers, pray all the time in spirit, and be vigilant to persevere. Pray for all the holy ones,6:19and me too, that the word may be granted to me to speak boldly. Then I can make the secret known, the hidden Gospel6:20for which I am an envoy in chains. Pray that I will be bold as I must.

6:21So that you also may be familiar with my habits, I am sending Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful attendant of the Master.6:22He will inform you of our concerns and soothe your hearts.

6:23Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith from God the Father and Master Jesus the Anointed.6:24May undiluted favor be with all the loved ones of our Master Jesus the Anointed.

  1. 1Note Paul’s comparisons: under/over, feet/head, body/completion. In Jesus, every entity is in its proper place, in this particular context of the subjection of all forms of rule and authority.
  2. 2Both “head of the corner” and “cornerstone” are identical in meaning. Some interpret “head of the corner” as a capstone (finishing stone) or keystone (the uppermost stone that holds an arch in place). But “corner” contradicts this, and no one would trip over an upper or finishing stone.
  3. 3The list items all refer back to being “filled in spirit,” and in the last item Paul is using a play on words which is difficult to convey in English: the body holds up (supports) the head, and the head (source) in turn feeds and nourishes the body. This is a picture of unity and interdependence, not hierarchy.
